To get to Swartkop Air Force base you get onto the N1 (Pietersburg bypass) southbound towards Jo’burg, and take the Rigel Avenue off-ramp, which will take you directly towards Hans Strydom Drive where there are traffic lights. At these traffic lights you turn right into Hans Strydom which will then take you across the N1 again, down the hill through Waterkloof Ridge Extension on your right hand side to cross over the N14 highway (road from Jo’burg International Airport into Pretoria central), through more traffic lights.
Hans Strydom then goes up a short hill and winds around Waterkloof Air Force Base on your left hand side. Continue on this road and cross over the bridge, underneath which are a railway line and a road (M18), still on Hans Strydom which now becomes Trichardt Road. After the bridge you’ll pass a Caltex garage on your left hand side.
Still on Trichardt Road you’ll come to a set of traffic lights and the big road signs will say Sunderland and Selbourne roads. There is a petrol garage on your right hand side on this corner. At this traffic light you turn right (slightly more than 90 degrees) into Selbourne Road and at the next traffic lights only about 150 metres from Trichardt Road, you turn left into Snake Valley Road (M24). Immediately you’ll find yourself in between Air Force camps such as 68 Air School. Continue on this road which will cross over the next highway, the Ben Schoeman highway (M14) into Pretoria west.
The Snake Valley Road (M24) now goes through a shallow dip and you will pass an obvious Air Force Unit on your left hand side, with radar and missile equipment displayed outside their gate (Mobile Deployment Wing). Continue on this road which now starts to go uphill and winds at the top to the left, where you will pass the S.A. Air Force Memorial also on your left hand side. A short distance after the Memorial you’ll be able to see Swartkop Air Force Base on your left. Continue on Snake Valley Road until you get to traffic lights which will be the Old Jo’burg Road (R101). There, turn left into this road towards Jo’burg and you’ll find the entrance to Swartkop Air Force Base on your left hand side after passing the Air Force Gymnasium entrance on your right hand side.
At the Swartkop Base gate you’ll find guards and once through the gate turn right at the T junction and the Harvard Club will be about 80 metres on your right hand side, an old military style red brick building with parking right in front of the door (usually).
